Save Ennis Town Calls For Urgent Update On 2040 Projects

A local campaign group is calling for urgent updates on the Ennis 2040 projects over what it’s described as an “information vacuum.”

It follows revelations that interest repayments on the company’s €10m loan are expected to reach €650,000 per year.

It’s been over eight months since Clare County Council hosted a special meeting of the Ennis 2040 Board.

At it, the council confirmed the contentious Abbey Street Development will not proceed until alternative town centre parking’s been identified and that it was exploring a possible multi-storey near the Temple Gate Hotel.

In that time however, both the council’s CEO and the Ennis 2040 DAC’s Chief Operating Officer have left office and their positions are currently filled by interim personnel.

Save Ennis Town Chairperson Gearóid Mannion says traders and members of the public still have serious concerns and can’t afford to be left in the dark.

This week, the local authority revealed the interest repayments on the company’s €10m loan are expected to reach €650k per annum, when the full amount is drawn down later this year.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O’Callaghan claims this will restrict public services.

A former Mayor believes that while the Abbey Street proposal was a “disaster”, the Ennis 2040 plan will prove to be successful.

Clarecastle Fine Gael Councillor Paul Murphy is expecting positive developments to be announced in the coming weeks.
