A North Clare publican believes opening hours need to be extended across the week to increase viability in the sector and boost the local economy.
It follows a new survey from the Licenced Vintners Association which shows strong demand for late bars to be open until half 4 in the capital.
Currently in Ireland, nightclubs have to close by 3am, while the latest closing time for pubs is 12.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
Peter Banim of Frawleys in Lahinch believes the low hanging fruit for government would be to allow pubs to open until half past midnight every weeknight.
He believes, however, that it’s worth exploring even later hours on the weekends as coastal areas like his could potentially reap the rewards.
Although the research comissioned by the Licenced Vintners Federation strongly focused on the capital, the results showing 50% of respondents want more late bars, has led to speculation that rural areas could benefit from the move.
Since 2005 alone, 114 public houses have closed in Clare.
However Manager of Moroney’s Pub in Ennis and Vice Chair of the Clare Tourism Advisory Forum Maurice Walsh feels there wouldn’t be widespread demand for the change in this county.
