A Clare Government TD is pushing back against reports that Ireland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe.
New data from the EU statistical agency has revealed this country is the dearest in the European Union for housing, health costs, alcohol and electricity.
The figures show that Ireland is the second-most expensive country of the 27 states in the EU, with Denmark being the only country less affordable.
Prices here are 36% above the EU average, with alcohol 103% above what other countries are typically paying.
Housing, water, electricity and fuels are 90% over the EU average while health costs are 85% more costly.
Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe says the figures don’t factor in the relative economic and political stability of Ireland, but acknowledges those struggling need to be supported.
It comes in a week when the governor of the Central Bank of Ireland has warned that inflation shock triggered by the war in Iran will likely get worse in the coming months.
Ireland currently has the 10th-highest GDP in Europe.
