Renewed Calls for Increase in Rent Supplement

A Clare government TD has called on the Social Protection Minister to review her decision not to raise the limits on rent supplement.

Joan Burton has argued that any raising of the limits would simply see money go into the pockets of landlords, but homeless support groups insist it would give the lowest earners a greater chance of securing a rented home.

This week has seen the government unveil a 1.5 billion euro package to tackle social housing queues, including 26 million euro to buy or build over 500 homes here.

However, Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Carey thinks opening up private accomodation to more people would also be effective.
