Shannon Airport has received the green light for a major new development.
The project will ensure ease of access for thousands of new passengers to Clare’s international airport.
The Shannon Airport Group is aiming to exploit a large area of relatively unused space on the western side of its campus.
The 5.7 hectare site is directly adjacent to Shannon Golf Club and the airport control tower and consists of Shannon’s ‘Park4Less’ Car Park and several derelict buildings.
As part of the proposed works, 11 industrial units will be demolished and the airside boundary fence will be re-aligned.
But it will be worthwhile, paving the way for the extension of the existing car park and the construction of a brand new one.
In total, this will provide an additional 1,051 parking spaces at Shannon Airport, along with a new dedicated drainage network and a jet blast barrier fence.
Clare County Council ultimately granted planning permission subject to six conditions, which included Shannon Airport taking measures to prevent flooding and to promote traffic and pedestrian safety.
