One dead, another critical after seperate swimming incidents

A man in his 20’s has died following a swimming accident in Cork last night.

Two units of the Fire brigade responded to a call about a swimmer getting into difficulty at Iniscarra at around half past 12 last night.

The incident comes as a 17 year old Cork youth fights for his life after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Blackwater in Knocknagree in Cork.

Cork Fire brigade recovered the body of the man in his 20s from the river lee water near Iniscarra graveyard at around half 12 last night.

Its believed his body may have been in the water for around an hour.

Two men were subsequently arrested after a fracas broke out involving a number of men at the scene.

Garda are also investigating a separate disturbance which broke out at Cork Uni Hospital – believed to be connected to the man’s death.

The incident comes as a A 17 year old youth remains in a critical condition in hospital this morning after a separate swimming accident in Co Cork yesterday evening.

He got into difficulty while swimming in the River Blackwater near Knocknagree shortly before six o’clock yesterday.

He was rushed to Kerry General Hospital – where his injuries are believed to be life-threatening.
