A new strategy has been proposed to ensure Clare’s rural post offices remain economically viable long into the future.
The Independent Postmasters of Ireland is requesting a €15m government subvention to open community banks in all post offices, in line with the successful New Zealand system.
According to the IPI, over 600 post offices nationwide are at risk of closure, due to the current operating model, which effectively puts physical post office transactions into direct competition with online banking.
Chairperson and Clarecastle Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O’Callaghan says the proposal would save customers a small fortune on products like mortgages.
