Midwest Simon, meanwhile, is expressing concern that the Government’s new housing plan places too much emphasis on the private sector.
It comes as the Taoiseach has claimed the document unveiled this week is about “creating the conditions to enable a step up in private sector delivery”.
The Government says the long-awaited plan will “empower the State, partners and the private sector to further play a critical part in delivery”.
Among the ways in which private sector delivery is intended to be accelerated are regulatory reform, tax incentives and capital investment of €275 billion in infrastructure as announced in the National Development Plan.
A pledge has been made to ensure a “strong pipeline” of zoned and serviced land which it’s stated with create the condition to attract investment.
Key aims of the plan are ending homelessness, delivering homes for older people and supporting social inclusion.
Midwest Simon CEO Niall Garvey says the Government must have a hands-on approach to housing construction, particularly when it comes to social homes, and dwellings for those in their later years.
One of the headline aspects of the plan is the objective of building 72,000 social homes which works out at roughly 12,000 per year until 2030.
To achieve this, almost €20 billion has been announced.
Ennis Chamber President, Diarmuid McMahon of Sherry Fitzgerald McMahon, says Clare is running the risk of being too focused on social housing.
