A Clare TD is defending the Government’s new housing plan, saying it is radical enough to meet targets.
It comes as this county’s opposition deputy has criticised the new programme as a repackaged ‘Housing For All.’
The Delivering Homes, Building Communities plan for 2025-2030 has set a target of building 300,000 homes by the end of the decade, but hasn’t specified how many will be built per year.
The plan also promises to deliver 72,000 social homes and what’s described as 90,000 starter homes, with €9bn in capital funding for housing just next year.
Additionally the first home scheme, which sees the state take a stake in a first time buyers home is now being extended to derelict properties.
Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe believes these measures coupled with the planning act passed earlier this year will remove obstacles and bring about change.
Clare’s Sinn Féin TD, meanwhile, claims there’s been no radical reset of housing policy, which had been recommended by the Housing Commission last year.
Although €100m has been pledged to purchase second hand homes for families exiting emergency accommodation, the lack of protections against no-fault evictions has been among the criticisms from opposition.
Shannon Deputy Donna McGettigan believes the plan isn’t ambitious.
