It’s claimed the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Explorer service hasn’t even scratched the surface of its potential.
The seasonal shuttle bus looks set to be renewed in 2026, after ferrying over 46,000 passengers across North Clare this year.
The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Explorer was launched on a pilot basis in May with a view to enhancing visitor mobility, reducing traffic congestion and increasing economic activity in local villages.
The service connected Miltown Malbay, Lahinch, Corofin, Liscannor, Doolin, Lisdoonvarna, The Cliffs of Moher, Kilfenora, Carron and Ballyvaughan, but some routes fared much better than others.
The Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher line accounted for over 16,000 passengers, Corofin to the Burren took over 9,400, while the route from Miltown Malbay to the Cliffs via Spanish Point, Lahinch and Liscannor also took over 9,000 visitors.
Lisdoonvarna Fine Gael Councillor Joe Garrihy believes the service needs to include Ennistymon, but that it has the potential to be world class.
Other areas didn’t fare so well, with Ballyvaughan’s route only taking over 1,300 passengers and Slieve Carran’s receiving just 715.
The Clare Tourism Development DAC, however, has put this down to limited accommodation, parking or connectivity.
The shuttle service cost roughly €500,000 to operate in between May and August and the DAC has identified that clearer timetables, enhanced webpage information and dual-language branding are all areas requiring improvement.
Secretary of Kilfenora Development and member of Clare Tourism SPC Andy Lambert believes that with simple steps in can be taken to the next level.
