There’s been an upsurge in demand for accommodation in Clare’s coastal hotspots over the past fortnight.
It comes as the heatwave has prompted many Irish holidaymakers to think twice about travelling abroad.
Travel agents are reporting a drop in bookings for foreign holidays over the past fortnight, while 61% of people surveyed in an Ireland Thinks poll say temperatures influence their choice of destination.
Those who booked foreign holidays in advance are still travelling as planned, but it’s the last-minute market that’s increasingly opting for staycations instead.
Europe is still gripped by persistent heatwaves driven by “heat dome” and “omega high” weather patterns.
Ennis Travel Counsellor Gearóid Mannion says bookings remain strong for September and October, when temperatures are expected to be cooler.
He says people are becoming increasingly conscious of climate when planning trips abroad though.
The Chair of the Clare Tourism Advisory Forum says very few rooms are available across the county this week as a result of the hot weather.
Hotelier Seán Lally says Clare is well equipped to cater for visitors looking to make the most of the sunshine, with a wide range of beaches and outdoor activities on offer.
