The first known wildcat ever found on the Island of Ireland has been identified, confirming the species inhabited Co. Clare more than 5 thousand years ago.
Bones dating back to the Neolithic age around 3600 BC were discovered by Dr Marion Dowd, an archaeologist at Atlantic Technological University, in Glencurran Cave in the Burren, County Clare.

It marks a breakthrough in understanding Ireland’s prehistoric wildlife and ecology.
Until now, no prehistoric cat remains in Ireland had been radiocarbon dated.
