Clare’s Oireachtas members are being called on to help unlock stalled development in Ennis.
The county’s TDs and Senator have been requested to appear before next month’s Ennis Municipal District meeting, following concerns raised over flood defences and wastewater capacity.
At this week’s meeting of the Municipal District, Clarecastle Fianna Fáil Councillor Tom O’Callaghan called on the Office of Public Works to expedite the publication of details on the Ennis South Flood Relief Scheme.
Clare County Council has also committed to carrying out necessary repairs and seeking funding to optimise the operation of the Clarecastle Tidal Barrage.
Since large-scale flooding hit Ennis back in 2009, over €60 million has been spent on various flood relief projects across the county town.
Councillor O’Callaghan says it’s now time to pinpoint locations these schemes don’t cater for.
Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat Daly suggested inviting the county’s four TDs and Senator, while highlighting issues over capacity at the Clarecastle Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Chamber heard that, at present, the Banner Plaza is forced to tanker wastewater away from the service station at a cost of thousands of euro a week, due to a lack of connectivity.
Councillor Daly says the issue needs to be put before Clare’s Oireachtas members because it’s stifling further growth in the county town.
