Solar-Powered warning signage could be deployed in South-East Clare in a bid to prevent heavy goods vehicles getting stuck at a railway bridge.
It follows a surge in incidents of trucks causing blockages on the main route from Sixmilebridge to Cratloe.
Poulawilly Bridge is in the middle of three railway bridges between Cratloe and Sixmilebridge, and the smallest of them.
Vehicles above 3.5m in height are unable to make it through and have no option but to reverse back up the R462, causing lengthy tailbacks in most instances, and damage to farm gates and property on some occasions.
A warning sign was previously in place on approach to the bridge, but had been removed by the local authority after it negatively impacted the grading of Cratloe Tidy Towns.
Cratloe Fianna Fáil Councillor Pat O’Gorman says the signage in place isn’t acting as a deterrent and that an updated flashing system is needed.
Shannon Municipal District says it has since erected additional signs on approach to the bridge and that it will consider an advance solar-powered over height vehicle warning system at a suitable location.
Cathaoirleach and Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe says it’s ludicrous the situation has dragged out this long.
