O’Neill Downplays Suggestions Of GAA Drugs Culture

The President of the GAA insists there isn't a drink or drugs culture within gaelic games, despite Clare hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald revealing that a section of former Clare players had used recreational drugs.

Addressing a mental and physical health seminar at Limerick IT, and as part of a wide-ranging and often personal speech, Fitzgerald said that from the mid-2000s, his feeling was the Clare was "a social team" and that some players were "taking harder stuff than drink."

In today's Irish Independent, however, GAA President Liam O'Neill says there is no issue at present, citing a conversation he held with members of the current Clare squad for part of his rationale.

Fitzgerald has also been widely praised on social media for other parts of his speech, in which he spoke about being bullied, and encouraged hundreds of youngsters to have dreams and goals and to avoid the pitfalls of alcohol and drugs.

Staying with hurling there was one game last night in the Clare Under-21 A Championship.

Clonlara beat O'Callaghans Mills/Bodyke 0-18 to 2-05.
