Rising Costs For Student Accommodation

On Friday’s, Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Ruairí Power former UCD Student President to discuss the current student accommodation crisis.

According to Labour Party Senator Annie Hoey, ten thousand euro a year and more is what some third level students are paying in rent to complete their studies.

Senator Hoey is calling on the government to urgently address the issue following a protest at Trinity College in Dublin over a 2 per cent increase in rents.

Ruairí discussed how the government needs to construct more purpose built and affordable student accommodation to alleviate the financial burden on students.

He also mentioned how the rising costs of student accommodation is not only a burden to most students but is locking many students out of the opportunity to go to university with many students having to commute or simply not go to college.
