An unusual explanation has been found for power outages which have been ruffling the feathers of people of rural Sixmilebridge for over a year.
After residents of the townland of Clogga complained to Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney about frequent powercuts, the ESB has revealed that woodpeckers have been boring into electricity poles in the area.

The persistence of the birds has damaged a number of poles to the point that they’ve had to be replaced, with their pecking resulting in 11 power cuts affecting roughly 40 houses over the last 14 months.
Deputy Cooney says the ESB is working to find a solution.
