Second Day Of Disruption Expected As Fuel Protests Continue In Clare

A second day of major travel disruption is expected on the main route from Ennis to Limerick and on dualcarraigeways and motorways across the country as fuel protests continue today.

Protestors representing ‘The Irish People Against Fuel Prices Group’ departed the Banner Plaza shortly after 7am this morning.

Additionally, the Shannon to Limerick Tunnel is closed this morning, with traffic heading towards the Dock Road reportedly “at a standstill.”

Heavy and slow moving traffic is also being reported on the N85, N18/M18, Childers Road, Ballysimon Road with access to the M8 in Limerick and Tipperary blocked at most junctions.

Meanwhile, Senior Government leaders meet this morning to discuss the energy crisis.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien and Roads Minister Sean Canney will be briefed on the latest projections for how the crisis is likely to effect the economy here.

A Clare Fianna Fáil councillor and oil supplier is calling on the Government to “look after our own people here at home for a change” amid the ongoing global fuel crisis.

Thousands of drivers participated in slow-moving convoys on major routes across the country yesterday and will again today to protest against surging petrol, diesel and home heating oil prices.

The mass demonstration began shortly before 8am on Tuesday and congestion continued into the evening, with the M18, N18 and key arteries of Ennis seeing the worst of the delays in Clare.

Sixmilebridge Councillor Alan O’Callaghan believes it’s high time supports were rolled out to assist regular people affected by mounting costs.
