Report Lead To Fresh Questions On Future Of Irish Rail Network

There are fresh warnings over the future viability of much of Ireland’s rail network.

An Irish Rail report for government, that has been outlined in today’s Irish Independent, states that 460 million euro is needed to protect a range of services throughout the country.

The Ennis-Athenry line is not specifically mentioned in today’s press report, but it has previously been outlined as one of those which was threatened with closure due to financial difficulties.

It comes as the National Bus and Rail Workers Union are to ballot members for an all-out strike in a dispute over mentoring of new driving staff.

The Union says its members are being forced to train staff without agreement, and Killaloe Councillor Tony O’Brien, a member of the NBRU’s National Executive, says the company is not listening to the views of staff:
