Report Finds Ennis Psychiatric Unit Over 80% Compliant With Regulations

A new report has found Ennis Hospital’s Acute Psychiatric Unit to be over 80% compliant with regulations.

The Mental Health Commission’s annual report for 2025 noted however that there were more applications for involuntary admission to the facility than there were available beds.

Of the six non-compliances recorded by the Mental Health Commission at Ennis’s Acute Psychiatric Unit last year, three were rated ‘high’ while the remaining three were classed as ‘moderate’.

Despite this, the unit was found to be 83.33% compliant.

While the report states there are 39 beds at the Ennis facility, it says there were 58 applications for involuntary admission to its care.

Countywide, it’s revealed there are 71 registered beds in Clare – the seventh highest figure nationwide – with all of these being HSE adult beds.

The report also notes that the Decision Support Service, which was set up to protect and promote the rights of people availing of mental health services who need support making decisions about personal welfare, property or affairs, marked its second full year in operation last year.

Figures contained in the report show the number of DSS accounts opened by residents of Clare rose from 308 in 2024 to 395 in 2025 – indicating a 28% increase.
