Plans Unveiled For New Car Park In Newmarket-On-Fergus

Plans have been unveiled for a new car park intended to control “random” parking in a south-east Clare village.

Clare County Council is looking to carry out the development, which would also involve streetscape and public realm upgrades, in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Central to the local authority’s proposal is the provision of a new parking area near what’s locally known as “Varden’s Lane” beside the entrance to the Newmarket-on-Fergus Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kilnasoolagh Park.

The project would also involve junction upgrades to include raised tables, the upgrade of existing parking areas with permeable paving, upgraded paved public footways and upgraded pedestrian crossings.

Additionally, it would include undergrounding of overhead services, street lighting, line marking, signage, drainage works and all associated works.

In the application, the council says the area is in “derelict condition” and the streetscape and public realm area are at “end of life”, resulting in “mobility issues” for locals.

It says the area of the proposed car park is already a “defacto car park” as vehicles “randomly” park there and the purpose of the works is to “regularise and control” this.

It’s also stated that the community have expressed a desire for an upgrade which would allow for “community events” and “possibly a market”.

It’s understood the project is subject to funding through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

Submissions on the application can be made up until August 10th and a decision is due to be reached by October 4th.
