INMO Warns Insufficient Staff On Duty At UMHL To Safely Monitor Mothers And Babies

The union representing nurses and midwives at the region’s maternity hospital claims there aren’t enough staff on duty to safely observe and monitor mothers and babies.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation says frontline posts have been lost at University Maternity Hospital Limerick, workloads have become unsustainable, and patient safety is under increasing pressure.

The HSE says, however, that staffing levels comply with agreed standards and that recruitment for additional posts is underway.

A lunchtime protest was held at the Ennis Road facility yesterday to highlight the issue, and union representatives are due to meet HSE management later this week.

INMO Assistant Director of Industrial Relations for the Midwest, Mary Fogarty, hopes there will be an openness to addressing the problem.
