Residents of one of Clare’s fastest-growing towns have reiterated their call for a secondary school to cater for the town’s growing population.
A petition for the construction of a dedicated second level institution in Sixmilebridge has attracted almost 500 supporters.
The petition now has 482 signatures, having attracted more than 150 supporters on its first day, while the local GAA club has also backed the campaign.
The proposal is due to be presented to local TDs, councillors and the Department of Education once the petition reaches 500 signatures.
Students currently face uncertainty about their second level education, as they’re forced to apply to over-subscribed secondary schools in Shannon and Limerick.
Calls for a secondary school in Sixmilebridge were also made in 2024, when the town’s population had surpassed 2,800 and campaigners are now hoping development plans can be included in Budget 2028.
Petition Organiser Maria Beville says the town urgently needs adequate services to cater for an area of its size.

Meanwhile, fresh plans have been lodged for a new housing estate in the south Clare town.
Ahaclare LTD is seeking to build 38 new homes, consisting of a mix of 20 three-bed and 18 four-bed homes on a 1.8 hectare site between the R471 and Rossmanagher Road.
Clare County Council and An Coimisúin Pleanála previously refused plans for a 38 unit development on the same site, citing ecological concerns.
The local authority is due to make a decision on this application on October 2nd.
