Outgoing HSE CEO Says UHL Overcrowding Has “Turned A Corner”

The head of the HSE says he believes University Hospital Limerick has ‘turned a corner’ when it comes to tackling overcrowding.

That’s despite the hospital consistently having the highest number of admitted patients waiting for beds this winter.

111 patients addmitted patients were left waiting for a bed today, according to the latest figures from the INMO, out of a national total of 608.

Outgoing CEO of the HSE, Bernard Gloster admits more needs to be done.

“I walk away feeling that Limerick has turned a significant corner. Let me explain. It’s to my absolute eternal regret when there’s one person waiting on a trolley this morning.

“I’m from Limerick, I live in Limerick, my family go to that hospital, I know it very well, I worked there many years ago. So I fully feel a sense that we have more to do.

“In terms of trolleys, my biggest worry since Christmas of this year has been in Galway and Cork, not Limerick.

“So, when we talk about risk, we don’t just talk about numbers, we talk about what’s behind those numbers.

“I’m certainly satisfied that the level of attention to the issues in Limerick is much more focussed, it’s much better, but there is a long way to go.”
