Oireachtas Committee Dismisses Signage Concerns

An Oireachtas committee has heard claims that Clare County Council has unfairly promoted Council-run tourist attractions on signage in the North of the county, ahead of privately-run businesses.

The Public Oversight Committee considered a petition led by Fanore-based businessman Ross Quinn, going as far as raising the issue with the Department of the Environment.

The Council says the North Clare area is subject of a number of schemes, including the Burren plan and Wild Atlantic Way, and hopes have been expressed that the last of these will address some of the concerns.

The Committee declared the petition closed after deciding that no guidelines had been breached.

Speaking on Clare FM's Morning Focus, Ross Quinn said issues will now be rectified with the installation of signage for the Wild Atlantic Way, and while he said that this was largely due to Fáilte Ireland rather than the local authority, he said he is hopeful that it will lead to an upturn in fortunes in areas like Fanore.
