Clare Sinn Féin TD Says Office “Inundated” With Calls For No Confidence Motion In Government

Clare’s Sinn Féin TD is denying today’s no confidence motion is performative and claims her office has been “inundated” with members of the public calling for the measure.

The Government looks set to secure the necessary support to win a confidence vote which it’s called in response to the motion tabled by the main opposition party.

Sinn Féin announced its intention to put forward a motion of no confidence in the Government at the weekend in response to its handling of the fuel protests as well as its subsequent package of supports.

Its party leader, Mary Lou McDonald, labelled its management of the demonstrations as “disastrous” while claiming the measures unveiled on Sunday were merely “half measures”.

As expected, the Government has called a confidence motion which it looks likely to win, with Meath East Independent TD and member of the Regional Independent Group, Gillian Toole, the latest to pledge her allegiance.

Shannon Sinn Féin Deputy Donna McGettigan says people are at their wits’ end and want change.

Danny Healy-Rae is the latest remaining Regional Independent TD yet to declare which way he’ll vote.

Senior Government figures have insisted the Kerry man is obligated to back the confidence motion, as his brother, Micheal Healy-Rae, secured his ministry on the basis that both brothers would support the coalition.

Tulla Fianna Fáil Minister of State Timmy Dooley is standing by the Government’s approach to the fuel crisis, arguing it’s constrained in how much it can offer in financial supports.
