Elected members of Killaloe Municipal District agreed the draft bye-laws for Inis Cealtra and Knockaphort Pier in Mountshannon at a special meeting on February 19th.

Following this, public consultation ran from February 27th to April 2nd, during which one submission was received.

The byelaws mean parking for the purpose of staying overnight at Knockaphort Pier is strictly prohibited.

Under the new rules, erecting a tent, shelter, caravan, mobile home, or arranging bedding, either at the pier or on Inis Cealtra, is an offence.

A number of other activities are now also banned, including digging, excavating or disturbing the ground on Inis Cealtra, lighting a fire on the island, interfering with any built structure on the island and interfering with the island’s flora, fauna, vegetation or livestock.

The sole submission received during the public consultation process asks that all prohibited activities on Inis Cealtra be similarly banned in the vicinity of Knockaport Pier Car Park.

It’s also been requested that casual traders be either prohibited or that a requirement of a licence be introduced.

Elected members chose to include this proposal as an amendment to the adopted bye-laws at this week’s meeting.

The new rules will be in effect and will be legally enforceable from July 1st of this year.
