Man charged over assault on Kilbaha Garda

A 20 year old man has been charged with assaulting an off duty garda from West Clare who was seriously injured in Limerick City last month.

Michael Fitzgerald of Cloughnadromin, Ballysimon has appeared before Limerick District Court. A teenage boy is also due in court charged with a separate offence linked to the same incident.

Michael Fitzgerald is charged with assault causing harm to Dermot Gibson, a Gort based garda, from Kilbaha in West Clare who suffered a fractured skull when he and his wife were set upon by three people at St Patrick’s Road in Limerick City on the 16th of September.

Detective Garda Ivan Muldoon – gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and said Gardaí  were not objecting to bail being granted to the accused with a number of conditions.

The 20 year old must sign on daily at his local garda station, stay away from the Granville Park and Childers Road areas of the city and reside at his address in Ballysimon.

Judge Eugene O’Kelly set bail on Mr Fitzgerald’s own bond of €1200 and an Independent Surety of €1200 and the accused is due in court again on October 16th.

Meanwhile, a 15 year old boy is due in court later today charged with the theft of a handbag and it’s contents from Dermot Gibson’s wife.
