More Longterm Thinking Needed From Govt Says Clare SVP As First Electricity Payment Kicks In

The President of the Clare branch of St Vincent DePaul insists that long-term plans are needed from Government to bolster supports for low income earners.

It comes as 2 point 2 million electricity account holders are receiving the first of three 200 euro electricity credits today, which are being paid out in an effort to offset spiralling energy costs.

Parents are also receiving a double child benefit payment today, to the value of 280 euro; a measure announced in September’s budget, as part of a 2.2 billion euro social welfare package.

President of Clare SVP, Denis Carty says while these payments will make a difference to those in need, more Government thinking is needed on what will happen after Christmas.
