Local Expert Believes Netanyahu Using Israel War As Gaza Distraction

An expert in Law and Islamic Studies at the University of Galway says it’s far too early to say if the truce brokered between Israel and Iran will lead to a lasting peace.

A US backed ceasefire deal was struck between the countries last night, however Israel has already accused Iran of violating the terms and has promised retaliation.

Donald Trump has made it extremely clear this lunchtime that he is furious with both countries involved in the conflict.

The President of the United States has warned Israel it would be committing a “major violation” if it drop bombs on Iran.

It comes as the IDF has threatened to respond with force after accusing Iran of breaching the terms of a ceasefire deal by attempting a missile strike on Northern Israel this morning.

For its part, Iran denies violating the deal, with Israel also claiming to have removed the country’s nuclear threat.

Defence and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke says in any case Iran’s position, has been considerably weakened.

The IDF first launched air strikes on Tehran eleven days ago, claiming that the Iranian regime was attempting to develop nuclear weapons.

The countries continued to exchange fire thereafter, with Iran reporting 500 deaths and Israel 24, along with hundreds of injuries.

Journalist Paul Kearns who is in Tel Aviv says it’s unlikely the Israeli public would have tolerated a prolonged conflict.

The US eventually joined the Israeli side, launching attacks on three Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities, before Iran responded by targeting a US military base in Qatar.

Professor Roja Fazaeli claims US and Israeli strikes on Iran were in breach of international law and that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is using this conflict to distract from atrocities in Gaza and fading popularity for his party.
