A “landmark” north Clare housing development which it’s claimed will support population growth and provide a year-round boost to the local economy has secured planning permission.
More than half of the 60 units to be built in Lisdoonvarna will be three-beds while a percentage will also be designated for social or affordable homes.
Summit Developments has been given the all clear to construct 60 residential dwellings on St Brendan’s Road in Lisdoonvarna.
The site, known as Elstree Tower, is a five-minute walk from the town centre and is bordered by four other areas designated for housing.
The development will consist of 18 two-bed three-storey semi-detached terrace homes, eight two-bed two-storey semi-detached houses, 32 three-bed three-storey terraced units and two four-bed three-storey semi-detached dwellings.
This means 53% of the properties will be three-beds.
Outlining the justification for the project, Summit Developments says in its application the site presents opportunities to “create a well-connected residential neighbourhood, enhancing both the local community and future development potential”.
It acknowledges Lisdoonvarna faces challenges like “an ageing population”, “migration of younger residents” and the reliance of its economy on seasonal tourism.
It claims the development would address these issues by “attracting a diverse demographic” which it says would support population growth and provide a “year-round boost” to nearby businesses.
The developer has entered into a Part V agreement with the local authority, meaning roughly 20% of properties will be designated as social or affordable homes.
Clare County Council has granted planning permission subject to 21 conditions.
