It’s hoped a new teacher training pathway launching in the Midwest this September will help address the shortage of primary school teachers in the region.
The initiative is the first of its kind that provides a pathway into teacher training outside of the CAO points system.
As part of the five year program, students will spend a year in one of the regions Education and Training Boards before transitioning into the full Batchelors of Education degree in Mary Immaculate College.
Head of the Learning, Society & Religious Education society at MIC, Dr Maurice Harmon, says the program will also diversify the teaching profession, in line with what’s already seen in primary classrooms.
