HIQA Report Finds Clare Nursing Home Didn’t Have Adequate Arrangements To Contain Fire

A West Clare Nursing Home was found not to have adequate arrangements in place to contain a fire following an inspection by the health watchdog.

It comes as HIQA has published it’s report into Regina House, Kilrush following an unannounced visit in February.

On the day of the inspection, 24 residents were in attendance at Regina House on the Cooraclare Road.

Inspectors said it was clear residents enjoyed a good quality of life and noted a calm and relaxed atmosphere within the centre and that management and staff knew the residents well and were familiar with each resident’s daily routine and preferences.

When attention turned to fire safety, however, HIQA found a number of shortfalls, including that the Provider, in this case, the HSE did not have adequate arrangements in place for the containment of fire and that several cross corridor fire doors did not form an effective seal when closed.

It found that, safety systems in place to detect fire and evacuate residents were not robust, and could cause delay in the event of a fire emergency.

A review of the servicing records for the fire detection panel also found that there was an outstanding fault that had not been addressed.

Regina House was ultimately found to be compliant in twelve areas of assessment, substantially compliant in three and non-compliant in just one.

The HSE has since submitted a compliance plan and has committed to remedying all fire precaution issues by August.
