High Visibility Policing System Expected For Ennis

It’s hoped a high visibility policing system soon to be rolled out in Ennis can significantly reduce local crime.

It’s after the Justice Minister confirmed the plan, which is now in effect in all major cities, is due to be extended to larger towns.

High Visibility Policing was first seen in the Dublin North Central and South Central divisions in late 2024 and essentially involves having more gardaí on the beat in high offending areas.

It was later extended to all major cities and while speaking at the Ennis Chamber President’s Lunch last week, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan says the next goal is to implement it in larger towns.

Ennis Chamber President Margaret O’Brien believes it could have a big impact.

There are currently 298 Gardaí operating in this county, which is 40 fewer than in 2007.

Jim O’Callaghan has indicated, however, that Clare’s compliment will increase this year, if national recruitment targets are met.

Chair of Clare’s Local Community Safety Partnership, PJ Ryan says more resources are needed.

The Minister has also pledged to examine boosting domestic violence refuge spaces in Clare.

In comes in light of a 15% increase in call-outs across the division last year.

Jim O’Callaghan says the long-term solution though is permanently removing abusers from the home.
