Waiting times of up to 18 hours were reported at University Hospital Limerick yesterday and there are fears of a repeat today.

The organisation says the Emergency Department at the region's main hospital is totally unsafe, with nurses in despair.

Mary Fogarty, Mid West Industrial Relations Officer of the INMO says it's been chaotic over the whole Christmas period.

In figures just released, the INMO says there are 34 patients on trolleys at University Hospital Limerick, with 19 of these in the hospital's Emergency Department.

This represents a small drop on yesterday's figure.

Barefield Councillor and Independent Election Candidate Ann Norton is a member of the Hse's Regional Health Forum West.

She says she's not surprised by the figures.
