€20 Million Increase In Costs Of Killaloe Bypass Project Downplayed

A Killaloe Councillor is downplaying a €20 million increase in the cost of a major bypass planned for the town, saying it’s down to inflation.

It’s emerged that the cost of the project, which was first announced in 2011 and has hit a number of stumbling blocks since, will now be in the region of €62 million, up from the original estimate of €41m.

The works will see a new bridge joining Killaloe and Ballina to divert from the 18th century bridge currently used, as well as an upgrade of the R494 to Birdhill.

It’s expected to be completed by 2023 and despite the major increase in costs, Fianna Fáil Killaloe Councillor Tony O’Brien has been telling Clare FM’s James Mulhall that he believes the works are worth it:
