It follows concerns from Ennis Gardaí, who had to deal with nine accidents there over a 12-hour period in December which led to temporary closures of the busy route.
The issue was raised at this month’s Joint Policing Committee meeting in Clare, where Mayor Joe Arkins said he always feels unsafe on the motorway in the Barefield – Crusheen area which he described as an accident blackspot.
Former Mayor of Clare and East Clare Councillor Pat Hayes suggested the speed limit on the route be reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h.
