Concern Over Drop In Uptake Of HPV Vaccine In Midwest

Public Health Officials have expressed concern over reduced uptake of the HPV vaccine in the Midwest during the pandemic.

The vaccine protects against the types of HPV that cause approximately 90% of cervical cancers, up to 95% of HPV-related anal cancer and 90% of genital warts.

According to the latest data, there has been almost 82% uptake of the HPV vaccine among 1st year secondary school girls in the region, down from just over 87.3% in 2019 and 2020.

A pop-up clinic will be taking place in Ennis on Wednesday next Week (September 27th) at the Ennis Primary Care Centre and Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine, Dr Claire Sharkey is urging young women and men to take steps to protect themselves against the deadly infection.
