Clare TD Calls For Overhaul Of DEIS Assessment Mechanism

The Dáil has heard that a Clare town isn’t getting the educational supports it needs due to an assessment mechanism that isn’t fit for purpose.

Meelick Fianna Fáíl TD Cathal Crowe is calling for a change in the way schools are given DEIS status, claiming the process doesn’t currently take vital aspects of educational disadvantage into account.

DEIS schools are schools that receive extra resources to assist students considered to be at risk of educational disadvantage and at present, a total of 18 primary and post-primary schools in Clare have this status.

Deputy Crowe says Shannon is one area which it could be argued deserves a helping hand.
