For the second time in less than six months, the question of Micheál Martin’s sure-footedness as the leader of Fianna Fáil has reared its head.

Despite accusations of failing to listen to grassroots members during the fallout of Jim Gavin’s disastrous presidential campaign, the Cork man managed to weather the storm and seemingly regain the trust of parliamentary party members.

Now, similar critiques have been levelled against him as the dust settles on the fuel protests and the Government’s response.

Following a scathing letter from the party’s youngest TDs, James O’Connor, Ryan O’Meara and Albert Dolan, senior deputies Willie O’Dea and Seán Ó Fearghaíl have backed calls for the “social contract” with the public to be repaired.

Chairperson of the Clare branch of Fianna Fáil, Mary Crawford, believes Martin should step down well in advance of the next General Election to give his successor the chance to bed in.

While there have been rumblings about a potential heave within the party, three of those touted as next-in-line for Martin’s position, namely Jim O’Callaghan, Darragh O’Brien and Dara Calleary, have lent him their their support.

TDs Seán Ó Fearghaíl and Paudie O’Sullivan, as well as Senator Anne Rabbitte, meanwhile, have requested an urgent parliamentary party meeting.

Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe insists the entire Government should take responsibility for its failure to effectively engage with the public last week.
