Clare Minister Insists New Fishing Rules Will Benefit Future Stocks

Clare’s Minister of State remains hopeful that new legislation due to come into effect next month will have long-term positive impacts for both anglers and fishermen, as well as for the recovery of fish stocks.

From June 1st, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is introducing legislation which will limit anglers to catching just three pollack per day.

It follows a warning from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, which indicates that pollack stocks in Irish waters are at critically low levels and that fishing needs to be temporarily restricted.

Concern has been raised that the move will hamper Clare’s Coastal Communities.

However, Tulla-based Minister of State Timmy Dooley, who has special responsibility for fisheries, believes the measure will help allow stocks to recover.
