A Clare Government TD is confident newly proposed housing rules will be put an end to planning decisions that “don’t make sense.”
The coalition has announced plans to ease restrictions for building one-off homes on family farms and along roadsides.
Tánaiste Simon Harris told his party’s TD’s, Senators and MEPs at a meeting this week that the Government is preparing the biggest overhaul of rural housing rules in two decades.
It’s understood the major changes to be included in the next National Planning Statement will remove caps on the number of homes built on family farms and will ease ribbon development restrictions.
At present most local authorities do not permit more than five homes in a row within a 250-metre stretch on a roadside, while applicants have to provide an economic or social need for building on family farms.
Clare Fine Gael TD and Oireachtas Housing Committee Member, Joe Cooney, says the current system is causing major problems.
A Clare Architect, meanwhile, isn’t convinced the Government has made the necessary changes to the planning system for the changes to be effective.
Ogonnelloe resident and Lecturer at the South-East Technological University, Gary Miley, says until decisions are made in a timely manner, housing supply won’t increase fast enough.
