Clare County Council Drew Down Less Than Half Of Its Tenant In Situ Allocation Last Year

Clare County Council drew down less than half of its allocation under the Tenant in Situ scheme last year.

The local authority spent just €1.45 million of the €4 million available to it under the scheme which allows councils or the Housing Agency to purchase rental properties when the landlord is selling to prevent tenants falling into homelessness.

The Government indicated in February that it plans to tighten the scheme as it’s concerned some local authorities are too reliant on acquiring homes and aren’t putting enough resources into building new ones.

Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Clare Colleran-Molloy claims the scheme should be tweaked as it doesn’t have a funding stream for properties in need of renovation.
