Clare-Based Winch Paramedic Says All Weather Conditions Create Danger At Sea

A Clare-based winch paramedic who’s received an award recognising his bravery says recognising the inherent dangers of all weather conditions is crucial to his job.

Jim O’Neill of the Rescue 115 crew based at Shannon Airport has been named the 2026 recipient of the Billy Deacon Award for his successful rescue of all 14 crew members of a fishing vessel that ran aground in Dingle Harbour last December.

Jim was presented with the award at a special ceremony in London’s Houses of Parliament recently.

He says even this week’s weather creates difficulties at sea.
