Clare’s Aontú representative is calling for a carbon tax ceiling on petrol and diesel to be announced in Budget 2027.
It comes one week ahead of the announcement of the Government’s package of supports, aimed at helping households with the cost of living.
It’s claimed half of people don’t expect next Tuesday’s Budget to improve their living standards.
The latest Credit Union Consumer Sentiment Survey found just one in 12 people expects Budget 2027 to significantly improve their standard of living.
According to the survey, healthcare is the biggest priority for people, followed by cost-of-living supports and housing.
Clare’s Aontú representative is calling for carbon tax increases on petrol and diesel to be capped in Budget 2027.
It’s one of a number of measures listed in the party’s pre-budget submission, which is due to be published later this week.
The party is also calling for an end to carbon tax on home heating oil and food production.
Under EU law, Ireland is required to apply minimum levels of taxation to fuel, but Kilmurry McMahon-based Aontú representative June Dillon says dynamic pricing would take the sting out of rising costs.

A Clare Government TD is optimistic, meanwhile, that the package of supports to be announced in next week’s Budget will better support people over the next 12 months.
For the next 28 weeks, 12,400 households in Clare will receive €1,064 in payments to contribute towards energy bills under the Fuel Allowance Scheme.
Meelick Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe says the Government is well placed to deliver the necessary support.
