A Clare teaching representative says industrial action will be escalated further if a pay agreement isn’t reached.
It follows an overwhelming vote in favour of industrial action by teachers’ unions.
Both primary and secondary school teachers will begin a work-to-rule from next Monday, October 5th.
This means teachers will not engage in additional hours under the Croke Park Agreement, or attend meetings outside school hours, including parent-teacher meetings.
99.5% of INTO members backed industrial action, with 95% of ASTI members voting in favour.
A 24-hour work stoppage is also on the cards for Wednesday, October 14th.
The Teachers’ Union of Ireland voted 98% in favour of industrial action, up to and including a strike, over claims the Government failed to pay an agreed salary increase.
Clare ASTI representative and St Joseph’s Community College Kilkee teacher Geraldine O’Brien says the work-to-rule aims ‘to bring the Government to their senses’.
The previous pay agreement expired at the end of June, with no talks on a new agreement having taken place since.
Unions have rejected claims that teachers have been unwilling to sit down and engage with the Government.
