The Dáil has heard calls for a cabinet meeting to be held in Killaloe next year, marking the 1000-year anniversary of the death of Brian Boru.

The East Clare town was the birthplace and base of the former High King of Ireland, who was killed in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.

Plans are being made to mark the millennium of his death, with the Central Bank planning to issue a commemorative gold €20 coin in his honour.

However, Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara feels senior Ministers should mark the occasion, and Killaloe’s contribution to Irish history, in another way.
