Calls are being made for better infrastructure coupled with increased local authority resources to help curb the blight of illegal dumping in the Shannon area.
Large household items including a couch, a bike and mattress, as well as general litter was deposited in a green area in Drumgeely yesterday, just days after a mattress amnesty allowing people to dispose of unwanted beds for free was held by Clare County Council.
Residents and businesses in Shannon have long since been dealing with persistent instances of illegal dumping, particularly in the Drumgeely, Aidan Park, Cronin Park, Finian Park and Rossbracken areas and a local authority Environmental Officer regularly patrols the area.
Shannon Sinn Féin area representative Shane Doody believes that better infrastructure and resources go hand in hand in helping to solve the problem of illegal dumping.
A representative of Shannon Tidy Towns, meanwhile, has criticised those responsible for being “completely environmentally illiterate”.
Derek Clune is calling on the Government to strike the right balance when it comes to holding people to account.
