The Minister for Transport has announced a 38 million euro investment in the facility, which will see the redevelopment of  the east jetty.

Ireland's largest bulk port company Shannon Foynes has announced an investment worth 38 million euro in developing the facilty.

It currently handles 10 million tonnes of cargo and is growing at around 8 per cent a year.

Under these new plans 150 jobs are to be created during the construction phase, with 12 million euro expected to be spent this year on the project.

The redeveloping the east jetty involves the reclamation of 13,500ms of foreshore and the demolition of the existing jetty.

The plans will allow increased operational space and allow larger cranes to operate there.

The estuary is the deepest waterway in Ireland and one of the deepest in Europe.

Last year the company launched a 30 year plan to develop port facilities along the Shannon estuary.

Meanwhile CPL has announced it's to invest 22 million euro in a new smokeless fuel depot on the site.
