Hopes Refusal Of Licence For North Clare Oyster Farm Can Set Benchmark For Similar Cases

It’s hoped the refusal of a foreshore licence for a proposed Oyster Farm off the coast of North Clare will be the end of a controversial long running saga for local residents.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has this week decided not to grant Silogeisc Siar Teoranta’s application to develop a 26km fish farm in Aughnish Bay on the Clare/Galway border between Ballyvaughan and Kinvara.

It was refused on the basis that the applicant was using a road other than the approved route to access the site, while locals had consistently protested over the potential harm to the habitat’s ecosystem.

Kinvara Community Spokesperson Eamon Coy is hopeful it will set a precedent for similar cases.
